It looks like we will be paying more not only for rent and food but also utilities. There will be an increase in gas and electricity in New York State.

The announcement came from the New York State Public Service Commission Thursday that utilities are expected to cost a lot more this winter. The increase of the global commodity costs of natural gas, heating oil, and propane is the cause.

As a result residential and commercial customers will pay more this winter for utilities from RG&E, NYSEG, and National Grid.

For electric services the increase is up 42% from last year and for gas it is up 29% from this time last year. The Public Service Commission also said if you feel you will not be able to keep up with your bill to consider payment options.

One option is HEAP. They begin accepting applications for the program November 1 however, you must qualify for the assistance. For information regarding HEAP click here.
