Utilities Offer Bill Discounts for Peak-Time Thermostat Adjustments
Written by DJ Sight on March 3, 2026
Kathy Hochul is proposing “Excelsior Power,” a plan offering a $25 monthly bill credit to New Yorkers who install smart thermostats and allow utilities to adjust them during peak demand to help stabilize the grid.
Utilities like Rochester Gas and Electric and New York State Electric & Gas already run a voluntary program with small temperature adjustments, advance notice, override options, and a seasonal bill credit. Some customers say $25 isn’t enough to participate.
