Starting Accepting For City of Rochester Summer Public Safety Internship

Mayor Malik D. Evans invites city residents ages 17 to 25 who are interested in a career in firefighting or 911 emergency telecommunications to apply to participate in the City’s Summer Public Safety Internship Program. Applications are being accepted now through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 17.

At the end of the summer program, participants may take the Civil Service exam for a Firefighter Trainee position in the Rochester Fire Department or apply for a 911 Telecommunicator position in the Emergency Communications Department. Each year, multiple graduates from the program have been successfully hired into full-time public safety jobs with the City of Rochester.

“The Summer Public Safety Internship Program opens doors to rewarding careers with the Rochester Fire and Emergency Communications Departments,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “I highly encourage young people to apply for this paid learning opportunity.” 

Applicants can choose between pursuing a firefighting or emergency telecommunications internship track:

  • Firefighting Internship Track (Ages 17 to 21)
    9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
    July 6–Aug. 14 (6 weeks)

  • 911 Emergency Telecommunications Internship Track (Ages 17 to 25)
    9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
    July 20–Aug. 14 (4 weeks)

Both tracks include a balance of classroom and hands-on learning from their chosen public safety career path to overall job readiness preparation. Interns are paid $17.81 per hour.
