The City of Rochester Plans To Crack Down On Vacant Properties And The Owners

Written by on April 28, 2023

City of Rochester Mayor Malik Evans announced three legislative plans to address property issues and vacant homes. This comes after Mayor Evans was alerted to property issues such as code violations and fires in vacant buildings over the past few months.

Mayor Evans along with other city officials want to hold the small number of owners creating the issues responsible. The first plan is to create a registry for vacant property owners. The second plan will require the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development and the Corporation Counsel to create a bill of rights for landlords and tenants.

The last proposal will increase fines and establish new fines for code violations and poor upkeep on properties. The vacant properties are a public safety and health issue for the community. These vacant buildings tend to host sex trafficking, drugs, and other illegal activities.
