Monday The Deadline To Enroll In Obamacare For Jan. 1st Start

Written by on December 15, 2025

Millions of people in the U.S. are running out of time to decide whether to enroll in Obamacare plans with exponentially higher premiums in 2026 — and Monday is the last day to do so for coverage that begins Jan. 1. For people who are covered by Affordable Care Act health-insurance plans, premiums are going up by 144% on average in 2026, since many of the subsidies that helped lower costs are expiring at the end of the year. In some instances, consumers are seeing their premiums and deductibles double, or more, in 2026 for the same plans they had in 2025.

One reason that health insurers have raised prices is that healthcare costs are going up across the board. They also raised the rates of ACA plans to counter the likelihood that younger, healthier people won’t pay for such costly insurance and the insurance pool will mostly be made up of older, sicker enrollees.

The Urban Institute expects 4.8 million people will be forced to go without health insurance next year because they can’t afford the premiums, the deductible, the cost-sharing, or some mix of all three. Others may seek out jobs with health insurance, move to Medicaid if they qualify, or downgrade their coverage — meaning, for instance, that they’ll pick a Bronze plan for 2026, even if they had a Silver plan in 2025.
