The New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) are urging customers to be vigilant when it comes to giving out your financial information due to a rash of recent phone scams.

RG&E and NYSEG customers have been reporting various phone calls to the two companies, where the caller falsely claims to be an Avangrid consultant in order to solicit confidential information. Some of these callers have even gone so far as to threaten to immediately cut off services if the customer does not make a payment over the phone with a prepaid debit card.

NYSEG and RG&E both want to remind customers that this is not a common business practice for them, both companies provide advance notice before any services are suspended. With that being said, PLEASE DO NOT give out any personal or account information to unsolicited callers.

If you receive an unsolicited phone call in which you are asked to provide personal or account information, and you are unsure of the caller’s identity, don’t hesitate to report it to your local police department or the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Lastly, let’s all keep a watchful eye over our elders. It has been proven that the elderly are often targeted for these kinds of scams, so please remind them of these cautionary tips.
