Washington D.C. Could Become A State Named After Frederick Douglass

Written by on April 22, 2021

We may be getting a new state very soon and it could be named after Frederick Douglass!

The new bill was approved by the House Committee to make Washington, D.C. the 51 state of the United States. The bill known as H.R. 51 is expected to pass a full House vote as early as next week. The same bill was denied in the Republican-controlled Senate last year in June.

President Joe Biden supports the statehood and said the White House would be happy to sign the bill. Did you know that Washington D.C. has no voting representation in Congress? The residents are denied voting rights in the national legislature and the local self-government.

When D.C. becomes a state all of that would change and it would empower its people.

Just about half of the District of Columbia’s residents are Black so if it becomes a state it would be the only state in America with predominately Black residents.

Imagine that a state with mostly Black residents that is the capital of the United States named after Fredrick Douglass. The Douglass Commonwealth, a state full of my Black brothers and sisters that would be the Capital of the country our ancestors built.

Wow. I am so grateful to be living in this time right now to witness another historic moment. Yes, I am affirming it!!
