WNBA Ban On Charter Flights For Teams May Change Due To Player Safety

Written by on January 24, 2023

Change may be coming in the way WNBA players travel during the season. The reason for the change is the issue of safety for WNBA star Brittney Griner and the Phoenix Mercury if she returns to play.

WNBA teams have been barred from private charter flight travel they must fly commercial. The WNBA owners would have to hold a vote with the board of governors to modify the current system. For now, owners do not allow any WNBA team to fly private.

The New York Liberty were fined a record $500,000 for the team traveling via private plane in the 2022 season.

WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart is willing to contribute money from her own name and likeness deals, and production hours, she said in a tweet. Stewart would like to be a part of a deal to charter flights for all 12 WNBA teams to ensure all players are safe.

And you know what??! I agree. My thought is keep the players safe and let them travel as a team via private flights. I’m sure a deal can be made with all the team owners and a charter company to make this work. Key word is safety.
