Over the weekend, world leaders have finally signed off on a new climate agreement, just after two weeks of intense negotiations in Glasgow, Scotland. Some countries’ leaders committed to bigger cuts from heat-trapping pollution. However, many nations did not agree to make such ambiguous, fast enough cuts for the world to avoid the worst damage from climate-driven storms, heatwaves, and droughts.
Aminath Shauna, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology of the Maldives stated: “For us, this is a matter of survival. “Please do us the courtesy to acknowledge that it does not bring hope to our hearts but serves as yet another conversation where we put our homes on the line, while those who have other options decide how quickly they want to act to save those who don’t.”
