Washington’s Football Team Finally Changes It’s Name

Written by on July 14, 2020

After 87 years, the Washington Redskins are retiring their “dictionary defined racist slur” name and logo after sponsors like FedEx, Pepsi, Nike and Bank of America pulled funding from the team and its facilities.

The team owners released a statement yesterday, saying that owner Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera “are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”

The new team name hasn’t yet been decided, but Washington’s quarterback Dwayne Haskins suggested the name “Red Tails.”

“Red Tails” was a nickname the Tuskegee Airmen gave themselves during World War 2. They were a group of Black airmen who flew fighters and bombers during the conflict — but the name also lends itself to the navigators, bombardiers and other support personnel who made up the 332nd Fighter group and the 447th Bombardment group of the USAF.
