UR Medicine Home Care Workers Go on Strike Over ‘Unfair Labor Practices’

Written by on February 24, 2025

Professional and clinical workers from UR Medicine Home Care began a strike Monday morning, citing unfair labor practices. Union 1199SEIU stated that key issues remain unresolved, including affordable health insurance, fair wages, and manageable caseloads.

The strike follows stalled negotiations between the union and UR Medicine. Workers from seven Upstate NY counties have been bargaining for their first union contract since May 2024.

At the same time, graduate workers at the University of Rochester are also preparing for a strike, alleging that university leaders are attempting to block their unionization efforts. They report earning as little as $15,000 per year, with concerns over health insurance and lack of support for international students.

In response, UR Medicine Home Care leadership stated they have bargained in good faith and reached tentative agreements on several proposals. They confirmed that contingency plans are in place to ensure patient care services continue without disruption.
