The U.S. government has implemented a ban prohibiting American government personnel in China, along with their family members and contractors with security clearances, from engaging in any romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens.
This policy, enacted by departing U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Burns in January, is a significant expansion of previous rules that only restricted such relationships with specific Chinese staff at U.S. embassies and consulates.
Those with pre-existing relationships can apply for exemptions, but if denied, they must either end the relationship or resign.
Violations of the policy will result in immediate removal from China. The move follows concerns raised by members of Congress regarding the adequacy of existing restrictions.
