The Freedom Plaza proposal in New York City introduces a groundbreaking architectural concept featuring two skyscrapers connected by a cantilevered “skybridge,” complete with a rooftop infinity pool. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), this megaproject located just south of the United Nations headquarters will encompass four high-rises, including two hotels within the 615-foot-tall towers, residential buildings, and a vast array of amenities such as restaurants, bars, an art gallery, and potentially a subterranean casino. The development aims to extend the greenery from the neighboring UN site, offering a three-block-long public park named Freedom Plaza alongside retail spaces and a new “Museum of Freedom and Democracy.” Set on a 6.7-acre site currently hosting the “Field of Light” art installation, the project seeks to transform the underused space into a vibrant public and residential area. With the inclusion of a Banyan Tree hotel and facilities by casino operator Mohegan, the project also competes for one of the three casino gaming licenses recently approved for downstate New York. Despite facing local opposition, the Soloviev Group, the developer behind the plan, has proposed allocating a significant portion of the apartments as affordable housing if the casino license is granted.
