Two Canadian men have been charged in connection with a computer hacking scheme that targeted educational institutions across the U.S., including one in Western New York.
Investigators say the suspects used malware to steal login credentials, damage computers, and secretly use the systems to mine cryptocurrency.
The alleged attacks occurred between 2016 and 2019, causing at least $5,000 in damages. One suspect has been extradited to the U.S. and is being held, while extradition proceedings continue for the second.
Both face federal charges and could receive up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
