Area Youth Invited to Apply for Summer Employment Opportunities

Mayor Lovely A. Warren and the City of Rochester, along with Monroe County and RochesterWorks!, invite area youth between the ages of 14 and 20 to apply for summer jobs with the City’s Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP) and RochesterWorks! Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).

Both SOOP and SYEP provide summer-long career exploration and paid employment opportunities for youth who are currently enrolled in middle school and high school, or who are actively pursuing their high school equivalency diploma. Participants in these two programs learn skills that make them more attractive to employers and more successful in school.

“Real world experience is key to establishing a rewarding career,” said Mayor Warren. “The Summer of Opportunity and Summer Youth Employment programs allow young job seekers to gain the skills needed to be successful in a competitive job market. Maintaining a strong workforce is key to our efforts to create more jobs, safer and more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities for our citizens.”

Interested youth may apply online for both programs beginning Friday, March 1 through Friday, March 29, 2019 at 5 p.m.  In addition to completing the online application, applicants must also submit a copy of their Social Security card, work permit, a recent report card, and a photo ID.  A printed application signature report page, signed by a parent or guardian, must also be included.

All supporting documentation will be accepted at Danforth Community Center, 200 West Ave., from March 18 through March 29, 2019.  Documents will only be accepted between the hours of 2 – 7 p.m., Monday – Friday.

Following completion of the program requirements, select applicants will have the opportunity to interview with potential employers for paid summer jobs. Past participating employers have included the City of Rochester, various community based organizations, area colleges and local businesses.

Selection for participation in SOOP and SYEP is competitive and not every applicant is guaranteed a job. Successful applicants will also be placed in career support programs, where they will receive additional training as part of their summer employment.
