This news story out of Penn Yan is the prime example of why you should be diligent in checking your child’s phone. Four minors ages 11, 13, 16, and 17  are facing sexting charges.

The charges came about after an investigation of several local young people exchanging nude photos through Facebook Messenger. Authorities seized multiple cell phones, computers, and digital media storage devices form the 16 year old boy.

From the exchange via FB the 13 year old boy is charged as a juvenile disseminating indecent material to a minor. The 17 year old girl also charged as an adult with endangering the welfare of a child. The 11 year old was charged as a juvenile with disseminating indecent material to a minor, and the 16 year old charged as an adult with five counts of second-degree disseminating indecent material to a minor.

If convicted these children will have to deal with these charges for the rest of their life. They may have to register as a sex offender which will definitely hinder future success limiting their career choices.

Parents and guardians even though you many not want to intrude on your kids privacy you might want to rethink that notion. I say it’s better to be safe than sorry and communicate to your child or children how important it is to let you know when or if they ever receive inappropriate photos or texts.
