Tamyra Mensah-Stock Becomes 1st United States Black Women To Win Wrestling Gold

Written by on August 4, 2021

Tamyra Mensah-Stock, an United States wrestler, has made history yesterday in winning her gold medal in the women’s 68-kilogram freestyle final. Mensah-Stock is only the second woman, and the first Black woman, to win an Olympic wrestling gold for the United States.

Tamyra beat our Nigerian athlete Blessing Oborududu, who also made history winning a silver medal and became the first Nigerian athlete to win an Olympic medal in wrestling. Mensah-Stock was ecstatic for her win and to win alongside Oborududu; “I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, look at us representing.’ It’s so freaking awesome. You’re making history, I’m making history. We’re making history. So it meant a lot.”
