Serena Williams Forced to Retire from First-Round Wimbledon Match due to Injury

Tuesday, the seven-time Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams, was forced to retire after the first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Williams was forced to quit due to injury.
Williams was winning 3-1 when she slipped and fell. She went off the court to recieve medical attention, but eventually left when the match was tied 3-3. With tears in her eyes, Williams left the court while acknowledging the fans.
In an Instagram post Williams stated:
“I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg. My love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on centre court so meaningful.”
She went on to say:
“Feeling the extraordinary warmth and support of the crowd today when I walked on — and off — the court meant the world to me.”
