Salt-N-Pepa File Lawsuit to Regain Ownership of ‘Push It’ and Other Classic Tracks

Hip-hop pioneers Salt-N-Pepa have filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), seeking to reclaim rights to their early recordings under the Copyright Act of 1976. Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton argue their early work, including hits like “Push It” and their 1986 debut Hot, Cool & Vicious, is now eligible for reversion. They allege UMG retaliated by pulling their music from streaming services, damaging their revenue and reputation. UMG counters that the recordings were “works made for hire,” asserting ownership. The case raises questions about artist rights and label control over legacy content. Salt-N-Pepa are seeking over $1 million in damages and full rights to their catalog.
