Push Continues For Daniel’s Law (Mental Health Reform)

Written by on March 22, 2024

Statewide efforts to prevent tragedies involving those suffering a mental health crisis are continuing nearly four years after the death of Daniel Prude on March 23, 2020, after he was taken into custody by Rochester police during a mental hygiene arrest. At a public meeting in Rochester City Council chambers Thursday, attendees pushed for reforms outlined in Daniel’s Law — a bill being championed by the Daniel’s Law Task Force — which is currently before the New York State Legislature. The proposed legislation would amend several parts of New York State mental hygiene law, and mandate community-led, independent response teams to address those in crisis instead of law enforcement.
