Programs Offer Relief from Summer’s Spike in Energy Bills
Written by Site Hub on July 25, 2025
With temperatures climbing into the 90s, Rochester residents are relying heavily on air conditioning, leading to a significant increase in energy bills. To alleviate the financial burden, the city has opened several cooling centers and is encouraging the use of utility assistance programs. Residents like Damon Cottle and Lauren Watkins shared their strategies for minimizing costs, such as limiting AC use during nighttime hours. Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) offers a “budget billing” option, allowing customers to spread their yearly energy costs evenly over 12 months, providing predictability and affordability. Cooling centers are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and include locations at 85 Adams St., 200 Avenue D, and others. This support is especially crucial during extreme heat, helping to protect vulnerable populations while managing household expenses. Residents can enroll in budget billing through their RG&E accounts online.
