The Associated Press has just confirmed that the President Elect has just nominated retired General Lloyd Austin to lead the pentagon during his term.
When he is confirmed, Austin will officially become the first Black Defense Secretary. His military career is impressive, he was the Army’s Vice Chief of Staff and led Central Command in 2016, which oversees all US military operations in the middle east, including Iraq, Syria & Afghanistan.
There is some controversy surrounding his nomination — The President Elect is seeking a waiver from congress, as the law states that troops be retired for 7 years before taking the post, but it has been done before with General Mattis, who had bipartisan support.
Retired two-star Army general Dana Pittard served with Austin during the fight against ISIS and had this to say about the General:
“He won’t grandstand the president, He’s not a guy who likes the limelight. He’s a team player.”
