Yesterday, New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced that her office will launch an investigation into social media companies in connection with the mass shooting in Buffalo. Specifically, James will be looking into the platforms that the shooter used to stream, promote, and plan the shooting, including Twitch (owned by Amazon), 4chan, 8chan, and Discord.
AG James stated: “The terror attack in Buffalo has once again revealed the depths and danger of online forums that spread and promote hate…The fact that an individual can post detailed plans to commit such an act of hate without consequence, and then stream it for the world to see is bone-chilling and unfathomable. As we continue to mourn and honor the lives that were stolen, we are taking serious action to investigate these companies for their roles in this attack.”
