Yesterday, a national event for the deaf community, Deafopia, came to Rochester’s Main Street Armory. Deafopia is a national organization that provides a variety of services to deaf and hearing communities throughout the country. Locals such as comedians Tom Willard were able to present pop-up comedy shows at the event.
Later that evening, a red carpet event was held for the award-winning new movie “WHAT?” in the Panara Theatre of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf on the RIT campus. This latest film is a black-and-white silent film focusing on a Deaf actor, played by John Maucere, who is struggling to land the role of a Deaf character. WHAT? has appeared in 23 film festivals in nine countries and won 20 awards.
