On Wednesday, April 15, the Associated Press revealed that 34-year-old Dr. Elvis Francois, a Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) orthopedic surgery resident popularly named “The Singing Surgeon,” received a four-song deal with Nashville’s Big Machine Records. His first EP “Music is Medicine” is scheduled for release on Friday on Apple Music and Spotify. William Robinson, another resident who usually provides piano accompaniment, also contributed to the EP. All money from the sales goes to The Center of Disaster Philanthropy COVID-19 Response Fund.
Francois is well-known for his live performances in front of hospital staff, patients and visitors. He has performed covers for Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” He has been a guest for CNN, “Good Morning America” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
“It’s been such a unique time in all of our lives,” said Francois. “I’m just honored to be able to share a bit of music with people, especially during these trying times. What we do as surgeons, what we do as physicians goes a very long way, but music moves people in a way that medicine can’t.”
He also explained that he feels like he’s in a dream: “I think the coolest thing about it is it’s a dream where we are all able to give our small parts to make the world better.”
