New York Attorney General Letitia James joined Rochester city leaders Tuesday, Oct. 20, for a gun buyback event as part of ongoing efforts to combat gun violence. According to James, more than 10,000 guns have been collected through buyback events across the state, including more than 600 in Rochester.

Participants were offered $600 for assault rifles, $250 for semiautomatic handguns, $100 for revolvers, $100 for rifles or shotguns, and $25 for nonworking, replica, homemade, antique or 3D-printed handguns.

Some participants raised concerns after discovering the gift cards they received did not contain the promised funds. News 8 brought those concerns to James, who said there had been an issue but that it had since been resolved. She said participants should have received their funds. While James celebrated the milestone, she acknowledged that more work needs to be done to keep guns off the streets and out of the wrong hands.
