Written by on February 16, 2025

Students in the Greece Central School District honored Black History Month with a “Celebration of Black Excellence” event at the Greece Performing Arts Center. The special double-matinee performance showcased students singing, dancing, and speaking on stage.

Adding to the excitement, Alan Mingo Jr., the lead actor from the Broadway musical “The Wiz,” joined the students, inspiring them with his performance and words of encouragement. Partnering with the Rochester Broadway Theater League, Mingo emphasized the importance of representation in the arts.

“So if it wasn’t for this seed that was planted, and kids like this, I don’t know if I would have thought it was possible,” Mingo Jr. said, highlighting how seeing professionals who “look like them” can inspire young performers.

The national tour of “The Wiz” will begin at West Herr Auditorium from February 22 through February 28.
