Government Moves to Drop Sheetz Race Case After Trump Halts Use of Key Civil Rights Tool
Written by Site Hub on June 7, 2025
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a motion to dismiss its racial discrimination lawsuit against Sheetz, following President Trump’s executive order aimed at eliminating the use of “disparate impact liability.” This legal principle allows for challenges to facially neutral policies that disproportionately harm protected groups. The Sheetz case originally accused the company of rejecting applicants with criminal records in a way that unfairly impacted Black, Native American, and multiracial job seekers. Civil rights advocates fear this move signals a broader rollback of civil rights protections, particularly in employment. A former Sheetz employee, Kenni Miller, has filed to intervene and continue the suit as a class action. Legal experts warn that dropping the case may embolden discriminatory hiring practices and discourage proactive diversity efforts.
