Friday False News: Law Making Couples In A 5 Years Relationship, Automatically Legally Married

Written by on August 1, 2025

The rumor spread on multiple social media platforms such as ThreadsYouTubeInstagramTikTok and Reddit that U.S. President Donald Trump signed a law effective Aug. 1, 2025, making couples who have been in a relationship for five years automatically legally married.

“Trump just signed a bill effective Aug. 1 if u have been in a relationship for 5 years you legally married #cc,” one Facebook post (archived) read. One TikTok video (archived) with the claim reached over 2.4 million views and 314,300 reactions, with a caption “Trump announced You are legally married if you are in a relationship for 5+ years.”

But there was no such law, nor was there any credible indication that Trump was proposing such a law in July 2025. No reputable news outlets, government websites, or official Trump statements supported this claim. What’s more, marriage laws are primarily determined by individual states, not the federal government. Any such major federal legislation would have been widely reported by the press. Therefore, we rated this claim as false. We contacted the White House for a comment, but a spokesperson declined to provide an on-the-record statement.
