Free Community College Program For New Yorkers 25 to 55?

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul expanded New York’s free community college program on Monday to include adults who already have degrees. Starting in January 2027, the state will pay for tuition, fees, and books for New Yorkers aged 25 to 55 who return to public campuses to study high-demand fields. Hochul announced the policy shift at a press conference at the Northland Workforce Training Center in Buffalo on Monday morning. According to the governor, women face the highest risk of automated job losses. “As I look at it—as I’m studying the fields that are most affected—84% of the jobs that are most affected by AI displacement are held by women,” she said.
Expanding eligibility for the Reconnect program at the State University of New York and the City University of New York is supposed to both fill labor shortages and retrain workers who’ve been displaced by artificial intelligence. Previously limited to adults who never finished college, the program now accepts credentialed professionals trying to pivot into new sectors.
