Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives Launches Project to Honor Legacy in Rochester with Cultural Corridor Development

Written by on March 7, 2025

The “Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives” has launched a project aimed at honoring Douglass’s life and legacy in Rochester.

They have signed a memorandum of understanding with the city to explore the development of a cultural corridor on Andrews Street along the Genesee River, less than a mile from where Douglass published his abolitionist newspaper, The North Star.

The initiative envisions creating a museum, cultural center, and public park dedicated to celebrating Douglass, who lived in Rochester for 25 years.

The founder and president of the initiative, and a direct descendant of Douglass, emphasized the importance of this partnership in honoring Douglass’s legacy and Rochester’s role in America’s reform movements.

The project aims to inspire future generations by celebrating the city’s unique historical significance.

This initiative represents a significant step toward recognizing and preserving the impact of Frederick Douglass in Rochester and beyond.
