Bus Safety Program Expanding in Monroe County

Written by on March 12, 2024

Monroe County is expanding its bus safety initiative by introducing stop-arm cameras on school buses within the Greece Central School District. The move aims to deter drivers from illegally passing buses when their lights are flashing, a common and hazardous issue according to the district’s superintendent, Kathleen Graupman. The program, which commenced in Hilton last fall and later included Webster and East Irondequoit, has already resulted in over 1,200 citations and 800 warnings in its initial five months. The expansion announcement followed a recent incident where a Greece school bus was hit by a driver who ignored a stop sign, leading to a multi-vehicle crash with no serious injuries. The collaboration with BusPatrol not only enhances student safety for the 9,000 students transported daily but also supports the program’s funding through the fines from issued citations.
