Brazen Train Robberies Target BNSF Railway, Stealing $2M in Nike Goods

A series of daring train robberies across the Western U.S. have resulted in the theft of approximately $2 million worth of Nike merchandise, with thieves specifically targeting BNSF Railway trains.
On January 13, a heist in Perrin, Arizona, saw criminals cut the train’s braking system, forcing an emergency stop before stealing thousands of pairs of unreleased Nike Air Jordans. Authorities believe these thefts are linked to an international crime syndicate based in Sinaloa, Mexico.
Using bolt cutters and saws, thieves broke into high-value containers, taking electronics, footwear, and other goods. However, tracking devices on some containers led law enforcement to apprehend 11 suspects, including nine undocumented individuals, one U.S. citizen, and one asylum seeker.
The stolen Air Jordans, set for March 14 release at $225 per pair, were found hidden in vehicles and nearby bushes. The train burglary wave, which has increased over the past two years, highlights growing security challenges in freight transportation.
