As of June 5, Phone Use While Driving Is Further Restricted in NY

As of June 5, 2025, New York State has implemented a tougher “No Touch” law to combat distracted driving. The new rule bans any physical interaction with phones or smart devices while behind the wheel—including at red lights or in traffic.
This expands on the state’s existing hands-free law by prohibiting all device handling, such as checking GPS, replying to messages, or browsing apps. The only exception is calling 911 or emergency services.
Violations may result in fines, license points, or suspension, with harsher penalties for junior and probationary drivers.
New York now joins over 30 states with similar legislation aimed at reducing accidents caused by distracted driving.
