As wedding season kicks off, couples in New York and 28 other states have a unique option when it comes to choosing a witness: their pet. According to Courtly, dogs, cats, rabbits—even hamsters—can legally sign as witnesses on a marriage certificate in these states.
While it may sound like a modern trend, allowing pets to participate in weddings as witnesses has been a tradition for several decades.
In addition, eight states and Washington, D.C. take it a step further by allowing pets to act as wedding officiants, including Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Nevada, and Wisconsin.
So, if you’re planning to tie the knot and want your furry friend to be part of the big moment, you just might be in luck.
