Monroe County has successfully transitioned all asylum-seeking families housed in a local hotel since July into their own apartments, according to the Ibero American Action League. The organization reports that 130 families have been integrated into the community, with 70 more expected to arrive over the next two years. Families will be directly assigned apartments through partnerships with local landlords.
The program has seen success, with some families achieving self-sufficiency early and beginning the process of seeking employment. Asylum seekers are eligible to apply for work permits six months after filing their applications.
Ibero American Action League continues to support these families by providing education on their rights and connecting them with essential resources. In December, the organization will host a Santa event to provide gifts for children in need.
The county’s approach contrasts with other regions, like Albany, where asylum-seekers are facing hotel evictions by year’s end, highlighting Monroe County’s commitment to sustainable integration.
