American Olympic Gymnasts’ Custom Leotards Come With A Hefty Price Tag
If you were watching the Rio 2016 Olympics through the perspective of an everyday person, the flips, tumbles and flexibility of the American gymnasts may have had you “Oowing” and “Ahhing” out your seats; but if your were watching through the lens of a fashion enthusiast, like myself, your focus may have been on the dazzling leotards that “The Final Five” were wearing. You may be thinking to yourself where are the wedgies? Is that sequins? Where can I get one and for how much?
Well, the Under Armour sponsored uniform was designed and created by GK Elite’s Kelly McKeown. McKeown estimates that each custom fit leotard is studded with 3,500 to 5,000 Swarovski crystals, and constructed with a high-tech fabric that is designed to stay in place while the gymnast are running and flipping. These embellished leotards estimate between $700-$1200 each. And what better way to accessorize a thousand dollar leotard than with matching Olympic gold medals. Congratulations USA female gymnasts team!!
