Epic Games Vs Apple in Lawsuit: What The Ruling Means For iPhone Users

Written by on September 12, 2021

On Friday, a federal judge issued a long-awaited ruling in Fortnite maker Epic Games’ legal battle with Apple over its App Store policies. Apple did land some small wins, but neither got what it wanted. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said Apple is breaking the law by forcing people to pay for apps and in-app items through the App Store. Previously, Apple took a 30% slice of the payment as commission. Judge Gonzalez told Apple to ease up and let in other payment options, within 90 days.

So what does this mean for an average apple user? If you are making an in-app purchase, such as your Spotify subscription, your money will go directly to Spotify. However, this doesn’t mean Apple will necessarily get rid of the 30% commission. It has only dropped it for certain apps on the App Store.
