Willow Smith’s Racism and Sexism Experience on Tour

Written by on July 1, 2021

During an interview for the cover of L’Officiel’s July 2021 issue, 20-year-old singer Willow Smith provided some shocking revelations about her experience while touring with her mother Jada Pinkett Smith, her mom facing “intense racism and sexism,” and how it impacted her own music career. Willow Smith stated; “My mom got so much hate. It was intense racism and sexism, just packed onto the tens. People giving her death threats, throwing a glass at her onstage. Some crazy stuff went down. I got to see that hate firsthand. It was so scary to me, and I think I internalized a little bit.”

What inspired Willow was her mother’s strength through all she had to deal with that kept her going. “She really showed me what ‘womaning up’ really was by taking a stance and not being afraid of other people’s judgments and perceptions. I really wanted to just go within that place in myself and try something new, regardless of what my insecurities were.”
