Dr. Jiqing Ye, a pathologist from Huanggang, China, currently works at Rochester General Hospital. This week, Ye learned that residents of his home town, which is approximately 50 miles from Wuhan, donated personal protective equipment to regional hospitals.
The Huanggang High School Alumni Association and Huanggang Middle School Overseas Alumni Association sent a variety of supplies, including over 300,000 protective masks. Rochester General Hospital and other medical centers are expected to share the donation, which also included over 21,000 N95 masks, 20,000 surgical masks and 3,000 face shields. Each box had “May the force be with you” printed on it and a personal message of hope. According to a report by RochesterFirst.com, one message translated as “Mountains apart, brothers in arm.”
The donation from Huanggang was a reciprocal one. In January, Ye desperately reached out to people around Rochester and other areas to send PPE and other medical equipment assistance to the people of Huanggang. He coordinated the donation with several Huanggang residents, including the Huanggang High School Alumni Association.
As Ye went on to explain: “I’m just very proud of them. To defeat the virus we have to be together, we have to face the virus in a united way.”
