The Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY, shared details about its upcoming $100 million Tropics Exhibit and entry plaza project, which will complete Phase II of the zoo’s capital improvements. County Executive Adam Bello announced that CambridgeSeven, a national architecture firm, will design the project, which includes a 22,000-square-foot entry plaza with education, classroom, and event spaces, and a 48,000-square-foot tropics building.
The Tropics Exhibit will feature a rainforest, tropical islands, a Pacific reef exhibit, and a 150,000-gallon Pacific reef tank. Anticipated animal species include orangutans, lemurs, Komodo dragons, clouded leopards, jellyfish, and mud skippers. Bello emphasized the zoo’s role in connecting the community with nature, calling the exhibit a unique opportunity for shared experiences.
The project is funded through a combination of $4 million from Governor Hochul and Empire State Development and over $44 million from Monroe County. While the project initially faced budget challenges, Bello assured that it will remain within its revised financial plan.
