Starting May 7, 2025, Air Travelers in the U.S. Will Need a Real ID to Get on Plane

Starting May 7, 2025, travelers in the U.S. will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, passport, or another approved form of ID to pass through TSA security at airports.
The TSA is implementing a phased enforcement period, allowing travelers without REAL IDs to board flights with a warning notice. REAL ID aims to standardize and improve the reliability of state-issued IDs, which will feature a gold or black star (or a bear star in California).
The requirement has faced delays due to COVID-19-related backlogs at state motor vehicle departments.
