What to know for the 2024 NYS deer season
Written by Site Hub on September 24, 2024
Whitetail deer season is approaching in New York State. Here’s what you need to know:
Season Start Dates:
Bowhunting begins at the end of September or early October, depending on your location.
Check the DEC map to find specific season dates in your area.
Tag and License Changes:
As of August 1, the DEC has changed hunting and trapping tags from synthetic paper to plain paper.
Hunters can now print tags at home.
With the new paper tags, hunters in NYS are no longer required to wear back tags.
Ordering Tags and Licenses:
Tags ordered online can be printed immediately, received via email, and accessed in your DECALS online account under “Active Licenses, Permits and Privileges.”
Online orders will no longer be mailed to your home.
Phone orders are delivered by email; if you prefer mail, allow up to 14 business days for delivery.
Purchasing Options:
Licenses and tags can still be purchased in person or by phone at select local stores or Town Clerk’s Offices.
Use the HuntFishNY app for proof of licensure.
Youth Purchases:
Children 15 and under must have a legal parent or guardian assist with tag or license purchases.
Visit the DEC website for more information on purchasing tags, creating a DECALS account, and understanding license requirements, rules, regulations, and prices.
