91% Felt Better After Blocking Smartphone Internet, Researchers Say

Written by on May 5, 2025

A new study found that blocking internet access on smartphones for two weeks significantly improved mental health, attention, and well-being for 91% of participants.

Researchers from the University of Texas and University of Alberta tracked 467 adults and found reduced symptoms of depression, better mood, and sharper focus—effects comparable to or better than antidepressants.

Participants didn’t give up screens entirely, but cutting smartphone internet use led them to sleep more, socialize, enjoy hobbies, and spend time in nature.

The benefits increased the longer the break lasted.
