As Rochestarians we take pride in our heritage and celebrate the people who have made a difference in not only our community, but also in our culture. The person we honor today is the famous Frederick Douglass. As a social reformer and influencer in the abolition of slavery, Frederick Douglass has made a huge impact in Black culture and we as Rochestarians are lucky to be part of his journey.

After writing his autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, and travelling the world to share his story, he came back to the United States and actually published his first abolitionist newspaper, The North Star, right here in Rochester!

Since then, we have celebrated his memory across the city, from dedicating parks in his name, to creating monuments to show our appreciation. And yet, the support doesn’t stop there, as we are continuing to honor him with a Freedom Festival to keep his legacy and the tradition of being proud of our heritage alive.

If you are interested in joining the celebration, make sure you attend the 2019 Frederick Douglass Freedom Festival. Come out and meet the Rochester forerunners who made the current Frederick Douglass monument possible. Learn more about Frederick Douglass’s journey and the historic work he created that paved the way for all of us. Attendees are also invited to decorate your own vehicle with the theme “Frederick Douglass:The Legacy”, or create a Douglass memory in your own way.

The event will be held on:
Sunday, June 9, 2019
Gather at 2:30PM
At Frederick Douglass Memorial Square of Highland Park
1208 South Avenue, Rochester, NY

***This event is FREE and open to the public!***
