With the cost of eggs up more than $3.00 from a year ago,11 million people are scrambling to find a cheaper option. The American Pet Products Association says 11 million U.S. households now own backyard chickens. That’s a 28% increase from 2023. But does the time, work, and cost you put into raising the birds really pay off in the form of cheaper eggs?

In one Ohio store sell chickens, they receive deliveries every single day. A manager tells 19 News that the store received 100 chickens in just one shipment on Thursday, and within a matter of hours, they were all sold. Some consumers were willing to take their chances and find out on their own if they could save money.

Other stores around the country that sell chickens appear to be experiencing the same thing; consumers are crowding their stores to purchase chickens, raise them, and produce their own eggs. U.S. egg prices have increased to a record high — and continued to rise in March. They’re up by 60.4% from one year ago, so it’s likely you’ll still pay a good amount for eggs you’ll use at Easter. A dozen eggs could cost you about $5 to $6 at some stores.
