News that’s happening around the world today. In South Africa, there are protests because of a racist advertisement for hair shampoo.
The advertisement depicts white women’s hair as good hair and black women’s hair as bad hair. See the images below. The pharmacy the shampoo was advertised at is Clicks, the second biggest retailer in South Africa. Clicks have since issued an apology. But the apology only came after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EEF) called for protests and the closing of its stores.
TRESemme the company that makes the shampoo commissioned the advertisement. It’s parent company Unilever SA issued an apology on their website.
“We are very sorry that images used in a TRESemme South Africa marketing campaign on the Clicks website promote racist stereotypes about hair.”The campaign set out to celebrate the beauty of all hair types and the range of solutions that TRESemmé offers, but we got it wrong.”
The EEF said the wrote a letter to Clicks Pharmacy with demands and if they were not met they would close the stores for five days. Clicks did not respond. As a result, the EEF went to stores that were open and shut them down.

CIC @Julius_S_Malema says as the EFF, we wrote a letter to Clicks asking them peacefully not to open and they refused.
We are here to teach them a lesson. #clicksmustfall pic.twitter.com/WHYDdqrc9U
