A 23-year-old Milwaukee woman is facing six felony charges after prosecutors say she faked her way into a classroom at Rufus King High School as a substitute teacher and made inappropriate comments to students. At her first court appearance Tuesday, the defense argued that Amy Jones is managing bipolar disorder and experienced a problem with the delivery of her medication on the day of the incident. “Miss Jones manages bipolar disorder and was experiencing an acute manic episode caused by delayed home prescription delivery. So, she was off her meds during the time,” said her defense attorney Michael Cerniglia in court. He attorney said she poses no risk, has no violent criminal history and should be released to Granite Hills Hospital, where a bed is available for continued inpatient care. Jones was released without bail, but ordered to stay away from Rufus King High School. She’s due back in court for a preliminary hearing October 20th.
According to Milwaukee County prosecutors, Jones, a former student at the school, entered the building on Sept. 24, told office staff she was a substitute teacher, and was placed in a classroom for the first three periods. Students reported to a school resource officer that Jones was “using profane language, racial slurs, sexually derogative statements and organizing students by race and gender in class.”
A 16-year-old boy told police, “The teacher was cursing and screaming at the students and that she called a student ‘fat boy,’ asked a student if she wanted to be a stripper or a hooker,” and told two white boys in the class “they were the type of people to start school shootings.” Students also told police that Jones asked them if they were gay or virgins. At least one student recorded her behavior and shared the video with police.
