WHO declares mpox outbreaks in Africa a global health emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox outbreaks in Congo and other parts of Africa a global health emergency as a new, more dangerous form of the virus spreads. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) had already labeled the situation a public health emergency, with over 14,000 cases and 524 deaths, mostly in Congo. The new strain, which has a higher mortality rate and affects primarily children, is causing significant concern, particularly in refugee camps. Despite the urgency, Africa faces a severe shortage of vaccines and medical supplies, further complicating efforts to contain the outbreak. The WHO’s declaration aims to prompt international support, though previous emergency declarations have had limited impact on mobilizing resources for Africa.
