The White House has firmly stated that there are no plans to return the Statue of Liberty to France.
During a press briefing on March 17, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to a suggestion from French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann, who claimed the U.S. no longer embodies the values represented by the statue.
Leavitt emphasized that the U.S. played a crucial role in preventing a German victory during World War II and suggested that France should express gratitude instead.
Glucksmann had provocatively stated, “Give us back the Statue of Liberty,” arguing that it would be happier in France.
However, the statue, a gift from France to the U.S. in 1886, remains U.S. government property, making it unlikely that France could reclaim it.
